WE ALL PLAY A ROLE
On a winter Tuesday night I ventured out in the cold to watch a middle school game where a couple of young men from my church were playing. I know that both of the guys work their butts off in the gym. They are in the gym when their friends, teammates and others are sleeping or playing video games. I have seen them working out with college players and taking beatings in pickup games against high school players to get better. So, I really expected to see them play several minutes, even as 6th graders.
In the first half I was disappointed. The game was nip and tuck all the way actually going to the break in a tie. The third quarter gave me hope. "Our" team outscored them 19-9 and had a 10 point lead with just 6 minutes left. I was sure to see my boys play now. However, the other team came storming back with pressure defense and solid scoring from one of their guards. Then they began to force turnovers. After a steal of the inbound pass and subsequent score the game was now tied. The coach looked down the bench with less than 30 seconds left and called one of the boys whom I claim as a "nephew." He entered the game with a determined look in his eye. Following the timeout the ball went in to him and handled it; getting a pass to the open player who was fouled. That was it for my nephew. He played his role, and it was a big one.
The team actually won on a last second pull up three pointer. They needed that one possession in the worst way and Nephew was able to deliver. His stat line will read zeros all the way across, but those in attendance will understand that he really helped to seal the game. We can't all lead the team in scoring, or make the game winning hit, or throw out the last runner on base, or intercept the potential game-winning touchdown. However, we can play our role. We need one another in order to rear healthy, loving and productive children Bryce and Bryanna will not fulfill their greatest potential because Carisa and I are great parents, but because God has blessed us to be surrounded by other great adults who are willing to love them also. Your children will maximize their potential if we all pitch in and play our role. You have a vital role in the lives of the kids in our community. Thank you for all that you do.
